Liébana will be the protagonist of the `Experiencia de Ecoturismo Científico en España` in spring.

Liébana will be the protagonist of the new `Experiencia de Ecoturismo Científico en España` this spring, being part of the project Experiencias Ecoturismo Científico en España (EECE), which will be active in the region through the company Senda Ecoturismo.

The manager of the Tourism Sustainability Plan of the region, Andrés Palomo, has been present at the demonstration of one of these experiences that, in this case, has focused on the programs that have the Foundation for the Conservation of the Bearded Vulture (FCQ) for this endangered species to improve their numbers in the Picos de Europa. The FCQ technician has made a practical example of how these visits will be made with tourists interested in the conservation of biodiversity and those seeking to know specific data on endangered species that integrate the experiential package. Cantabria is one of the eight autonomous communities, in addition to Asturias, Aragon, Catalonia, Castilla y León, Extremadura, Castilla La Mancha and Andalusia, which are part of this unique project in Europe. The direct beneficiaries are the six participating nature foundations, the managers of the 12 species interpretation centers and protected areas. Also, the tourism companies of the territory such as accommodation, guides, travel agencies and businesses that are associated with the scientific ecotourism experiences in each of the protected areas where this new ecotourism offer has been created. The Scientific Ecotourism Experience is a trip to get to know, observe, learn and appreciate species and their habitats, touring protected areas and their surroundings, where this biodiversity is found. In this way, through the interpretation of the existing conservation programs carried out by conservationist foundations, environmental institutions and member companies, it is possible to enjoy a wide range of nature tourism while respecting the fauna and flora and developing sustainable practices that contribute to preserve the ecosystems. Regarding the initiative, the president of the Mancomunidad de Liébana y Peñarrubia, Francisco Javier Gómez, said that “Liébana is a territory rich in biodiversity and this great value can and should be linked to socioeconomic growth with a varied offer that results in wealth for the territory, while respecting the natural values”. In this sense, Gómez recalled that the region receives an “increasingly high” percentage of foreign tourists, who are looking for this type of activities in nature and in the rural environment. “Liébana is in a multitude of cultural, natural, historical, religious, sports, gastronomic tourism projects. We have an enormous potential to offer to the traveler and for the people of Liébana to get profitability and recover population in our rural territory”, added the president of the Mancomunidad. Senda Ecoturismo is the only certified company in Liébana that will offer this service to groups of 6 to 8 people, on demand. This unique model of scientific tourism will work in collaboration with the Brown Bear Foundation and the Foundation for the Conservation of the Bearded Vulture to show the conservation programs of the brown bear and the bearded vulture with specialized technicians.
