A delegation has traveled to the European Parliament and held interviews with several of the new MEPs A delegation of Ecologists in Action and Platform in Defense of the Mountains of Aragon has traveled to Brussels for a series of interviews with MEPs elected last June, with the aim of refuting projects to expand ski resorts in Aragon with European funding . According to the platform, these initiatives -catalogued as “sustainable tourism”- “do not respect the protocols established in the Next Generation program”. According to them, they violate criteria such as mitigation and adaptation to climate change, sustainable use and protection of water and marine resources, and protection and recovery of biodiversity and ecosystems. That is why the delegation met this Wednesday with the team of Estrella Galán, MEP for the Left-La Izquierda (Sumar) group, who confirmed the intention to ask a parliamentary question to the European Commission on compliance with the requirements for obtaining Next Generation Funds and on the mandatory implementation of the projects mentioned on December 31, 2024. They also held another interview with the Socialist MEP César Luena, while Irene Montero and Isa Serra (Podemos) expressed their “willingness” to collaborate with the Platform and are considering the possibility of addressing a question to the Vice President of the European Commission, Teresa Ribera, and confirmed that they will support the questions posed by other MEPs. Also, the platform ensures that among the MEPs consulted has created “concern” that these projects, linked to the snow sector in Aragon, “can not meet the deadlines for the execution of the works established by the European Commission and have to return the funds allocated”. Also several MEPs, in line with the platform, expressed their “surprise” at the “constant increase of public funds”, in relation to the 45 million euros committed by the Government of Aragon, to the works of the cable car that would link Astún and Candanchú.
