Aínsa receives the Jaulín Award in Defense of Nature.

The town of Jaulín has delivered this Saturday its XLIII Awards in Defense of Nature recognizing the work of the Network of Municipalities for Agroecology.

The city council of Zaragoza celebrates its 43rd edition in the framework of the Tree Festival and recognizes the national network, of which Aínsa holds the presidency, the promotion of healthy and sustainable food systems with the environment. The ceremony was attended by Mayor Enrique Pueyo and the coordinator of the Network, Jorge Molero. The Network of Municipalities for Agroecology is made up of 25 municipalities in Spain. Their efforts are focused on building local food systems that are environmentally friendly, inclusive, resilient, safe and diversified, and that guarantee sustainable development and healthy food for the population. These have been the motivations for the Zaragoza city council to have thought of the Network as one of the three entities awarded on January 27th. Bodegas San Valero and the AROPA2 project were the other two winners. “Our work focuses on technical support, exchange of experiences, training and collaboration with other administrations, networks and alliances to guarantee the right to healthy and sustainable food, among other crucial issues such as public food procurement or urban planning linked to food,” explained Jorge Molero. “We believe that the work we are doing has a strong potential for impact and scope and we are grateful that Jaulín has thought of us because it motivates us and helps us to be more visible,” he said. The mayor of Aínsa-Sobrarbe, the town that has held the presidency since November 2023 and that also hosted the meeting and the annual assembly on those dates, has also expressed himself along these lines. “In the Network there are large towns like Rivas-Vaciamadrid or Valencia, and other small ones like Aínsa, but we are all united by the illusion of working to achieve a healthy and accessible food for all and that at the same time means a boost to the socio-economic development of our territories, so receiving an award indicates that we are on the right track and we hope that little by little more entities join this cause”. The Jaulín Environment Awards treasure a beautiful story of recovery of a natural environment. Until 1975, Jaulín was supplied by rainwater collected in ponds. In that year a borehole was drilled and running water finally reached the village. It was then when it was decided to recover the space of the millenary pond and its surroundings, where the municipal garbage dump was located, and turn it into a park. The action was awarded the National Environment Prize and the Aragon Environment Prize. This turn of events that so marked the town in the province of Zaragoza continues to this day, distributing awards among individuals, entities, associations and companies, on this occasion recognizing the work of the Network of Municipalities for Agroecology and, by extension, the municipalities such as Aínsa that are part of this project.
