SOS Tendidos Eléctricos calls for new regulations on power lines and birds.

The platform SOS Tendidos Eléctricos claimed this Thursday to the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (Miteco) “urgently” a new regulation on power lines and you see that he promised a year ago. The entity requested the revision of Royal Decree 1432/2008, of 29 August, which establishes measures for the protection of birds against collision and electrocution on high-voltage power lines, which is the standard that regulates the correction of power lines for the protection of birds in Spain. The ‘State Strategic Plan for Natural Heritage and Biodiversity to 2030’, published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) last December 30, 2022, established that in 2023 the modification of the aforementioned decree should be approved in order to “advance in the objective of safer power lines for birds”, stated the platform. To achieve this, the plan specifies that the revision of the royal decree must “improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the preventive measures to be implemented, promote the adaptation of existing lines to the technical requirements established in the regulation and eliminate the obligation of public funding for the correction of old power lines”, according to SOS Tendidos Eléctricos. Likewise, the Strategic Plan is the document that currently sets the objectives, actions and criteria that should promote the conservation, sustainable use and restoration of nature in Spain. For the Plataforma SOS Tendidos Eléctricos, this legal revision is urgent and, therefore, is one of the main demands of the association, understanding that after more than fifteen years since the approval of the royal decree, this current regulation “is still far from” its objective: to effectively solve the problem of the mortality of tens of thousands of birds. In addition, “the electric companies, which are currently making enormous profits, must assume their responsibility and the costs of the modifications to the power lines”, the organization pointed out.
