The ecologists raise to the prosecutors of Teruel and Castellón the first death of a bearded vulture in a wind turbine.

The Masía specimen was found lifeless next to the Refollas wind farm and the Foundation for the Conservation of the Bearded Vulture (FCQ) requests the precautionary suspension of the activity to avoid more deaths of protected species. The conservationist groups are going to take the first death of a bearded vulture due to a windmill to the Public Prosecutor’s Office. On July 7, 2024, members of the Foundation for the Conservation of the Bearded Vulture (FCQ) located the carcass of the Bearded Vulture Masia next to the wind farm of Refollas (Castellón). Agents of Nature Protection (APN) of the Government of Aragón, transferred the specimen to the wildlife recovery center of La Alfranca, where they certified the death by impact with a wind turbine. For this reason, the legal office of the FCQ has filed a complaint with the public prosecutors of Teruel and Castellón. The complaint exposes the possible crimes contemplated in the penal code regarding the protection of fauna by those responsible for the Refollas wind farm (Renomar and Acciona), the inaction of the competent regional administration (in this case the Generalitat de Valencia) and the request for suspension or paralysis of the activity of the Refoyas wind farm, as a precautionary measure, so that no more deaths of protected species occur, until the necessary measures are adopted. The organization recalls that this is the first case of death of a Bearded Vulture in a wind farm in Spain and expresses its desire that it be the last. Currently in the Maestrazgo of Teruel and Castellón remain between three and six specimens of these scavenger birds, all released by the Generalitat de Valencia. The FCQ paralyzed in 2023 the project of reintroduction of the Bearded Vulture in Maestrazgo (Teruel). Source:
