Among the awarded municipalities, it has been chosen for its Local Sustainable Dining Room and Organic Garden. Aínsa-Sobrarbe participates in the Annual Meeting 2024 of the Network of Municipalities for Agroecology, which is held from 3 to 5 October at the Royal Botanical Garden of Cordoba. This event aims to strengthen the commitment of authorities and experts in the promotion of sustainable and agroecological food policies at the local level. Enrique Pueyo, mayor of Aínsa-Sobrarbe and president of the Network of Municipalities for Agroecology, highlighted the theme of the meeting: “Improving our food to take care of our health and the territory”. Pueyo stressed that Aínsa has become a benchmark in agroecology thanks to the joint work with local producers and educational centers, which promote the consumption of local food. “It is an honor for Aínsa to be recognized for our work in agroecology. This achievement would not be possible without the dedication of our producers and the support of our schools, which promote the consumption of local foods,” said Pueyo. Jorge Molero, coordinator of the Network, emphasized the importance of agroecology as a tool to guarantee the right to food and transform local economies. Molero pointed out that the Network’s Working Groups are crucial to face the challenges of the municipalities. “Every step we take together on this path, every idea that emerges in these working spaces, brings us closer to that vision,” Molero commented, encouraging participants to exchange ideas and continue building fairer and more sustainable food policies. The meeting program includes discussions on biodiversity in local food policies, policy monitoring and evaluation, and the incorporation of a feminist perspective in these policies. The Working Groups focus on issues such as public procurement, the right to food and urban planning linked to food, strengthening cooperation between municipalities and local actors. In addition, it addresses the monitoring and scaling of food policies for climate action, the articulation of local initiatives at regional and state level, and the campaign ’13 measures’ along with a database on food policies to strengthen the agroecological transition. The event will be attended by key figures such as the Mayor of Cordoba, José María Bellido Roche, and representatives of the Ministries of Agriculture, the Spanish Government delegation in Andalusia and Agenda 2030.

The “Ciudades y Pueblos que Alimentan 2024” Awards, which recognize the commitment of municipalities in promoting sustainable and agroecological food policies, have been presented. The ceremony, with the collaboration of Pepe Esquinas and Francesco Cagnola, has awarded to: City Council of Baztán: for its project in the residence for the elderly, articulating the local offer of healthy and agroecological food in collaboration with local producers. The jury highlighted that this initiative exemplifies how small municipalities can lead food transformations from the local level. Barcelona City Council: for its Comerç Verd initiative, which aims to revitalize municipal markets and encourage the purchase of local products. This project was valued for its capacity to be replicated in other cities. City Council of Aínsa-Sobrarbe: Awarded for its Sustainable Local Dining Room and Organic Garden, which involves the educational community and local producers in the promotion of healthy and sustainable food in schools. This initiative has made it possible not only to improve nutrition in schools, but also to create a direct link between local producers and the school community. The municipality, located in the Aragonese Pyrenees, has been able to take advantage of its natural environment to develop food policies that promote sustainability and food justice. In addition, the organic garden is an educational space that not only teaches about agroecological production, but also strengthens the social fabric of the town. Fuenlabrada City Council: It won the special prize in collaboration with the Milan Pact for Urban Food Policies for its project Cómete Fuenlabrada, which promotes itinerant direct sales markets and agroecology in urban areas. The afternoon will be dedicated to spaces for deliberation, with parallel sessions such as the General Assembly of the Network and a round table on the role of local markets to transform food.
